Senior Taliban commander detained in Helmand

Thursday, November 24, 2011 – NATO-led International Security Assistance Force officials following a statement said, a senior Taliban commander was detained following a joint military operation by Afghan and international coalition forces in southern Helmand province.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force officials following a statement said, a senior Taliban commander was detained following a joint military operation by Afghan and international coalition forces in southern Helmand province.

The statement further added, the detained senior Taliban commander was recognized as Wali Mohammad and was detained along with four other Taliban fighters following an operation in Nahr-e-Saraj district of southern Helmand province.

According to ISAF officials, the detained Taliban commander had recently returned to Afghanistan from neighboring Pakistan and was captured by Afghan and coalition forces.

ISAF officials also said, Wali Mohammad is considered to be a vital commander for the Taliban militants in Afghanistan and he is also believed to have close relations with the Taliban group council.
According to NATO officials, Wali Mohammad was a key player in the Taliban militants group and was involved in organizing suicide bomb attacks.

He was also detained by Afghan and NATO earlier in 2008 and managed to flee from Sar-pozi cell in southern Kandahar province.
Taliban militants group fighting the Afghan government and coalition forces yet to comment regarding the detenntion of Wali Mohammad.
