Blasts hit northern Nigeria cities after Boko Haram kingpin arrested

LAGOS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A string of blasts hit northern Nigeria including the hotspots Maiduguri and Kano on Monday after the authorities arrested kingpin and official spokesperson of the Boko Haram sect, Abu Qaqa, local police reported.

A market was among the targets of attacks in Maiduguri, while gunmen raided a police station in Kano.

Boko Haram launched the first attack in Maiduguri in July 2009. The city has been hit by almost daily bomb blasts ever since. More than 800 people have died at the hands of the militant sect.

On Feb. 1, Nigerian security forces confirmed the arrest of Qaqa in Maiduguri, saying the development would deplete the rank of the sect and help in tracking down other chieftains of the dreaded group.
