KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan’s spy service on Sunday revealed that its operatives had prevented suicide attacks in the central capital and southern Kandahar province during a recent regional gathering in Kabul.

National Directorate of Security (NDS) officials arrested four suicide attackers who wanted to reach their target the day (Thursday) the Heart of Asia Conference was taking place in Kabul,” an NDS spokesman said.

Shafiqullah Tahiri told a news conference the Taliban had sent two suicide attackers to target an Afghan military centre in Kabul, but the bombers were arrested before they could execute their plan.

Afghanistan and Turkey said the conference was a success, with regional countries agreeing on joint political consultations and continued cooperation in line with the Istanbul process.

Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul and his Turkish counterpart Ahmad Daud Oglo told a joint news briefing on Thursday the conference was important in building confidence among regional countries.

Identifying the detainees as Rahim Jan and Abdullah, both residents of southern Ghazni province, the NDS official said they were arrested with explosives.

Maulvi Mohammad, a Taliban commander who plotted the suicide attack, had obtained a house on rent in the Ahmad Shah Baba Mina area of Kabul to keep the two there. The pair was being interrogated, Tahiri added.

Similarly, two would-be suicide attackers were detained in the Spin Boldak border town of southern Kandahar province, the NDS official said. The two were riding an auto rickshaw laden with explosives.

They planned to carry out a suicide attack simultaneously with the start of the Heart of Asia Conference in Kabul, Tahiri continued. Residents of Maroof district of Kandahar and northern Kuduz province, the detainees had confessed to their intention of carrying out suicide attacks, he concluded.
