June 18., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Evening Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed several Taliban leaders during an operation in Nangarhar province, eastern Afghanistan Sunday.

After positively identifying the armed group of insurgents, and ensuring no civilians were in the area, the security force engaged the Taliban leaders with a precision airstrike away from all civilian structures.

The commanders, who were known to coordinate with Al Qaeda, facilitated the movement of foreign fighters across the border from Pakistan into Afghanistan and were responsible for attacks on coalition and Afghan forces.

A follow-on assessment of the area after the strike determined no civilian property was damaged and no civilians were harmed.

North

In Shahr-e-Buzurg district, Badakhshan province today, Afghan and coalition forces killed an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader by calling in a precision airstrike. The IMU leader was directly involved in the kidnapping of four aid workers in northeastern Afghanistan last month. During a follow-on assessment of the area, the forces confirmed no civilian property was damaged and no civilians were harmed during the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents associated with an IMU commander in Yaftal-e Sufla district, Badakhshan province, today. The security force also seized multiple small-arms and ammunition as a result of this operation. No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed during the operation.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Haqqani explosives expert in Mota Khan district, Paktika province, today. As the security force approached the explosive expert’s suspected location, insurgents attacked the Afghan and coalition troops with small-arms fire. The security force returned fire, killing four insurgents. The force detained one additional suspected insurgent and seized multiple assault rifles, grenades and a suicide vest during the operation. No civilians were harmed during the exchange.
