Al-Qaida commander captured by security forces in southern Yemen

ADEN, Yemen, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Yemeni security forces on Thursday detained a high-level commander of the Yemen-based al- Qaida wing in the southern province of Abyan, the state-run Saba news agency reported.

"A high-level al-Qaida commander in southern region, Sulman Hassan Murshid, has been captured in Abyan during an operation by security forces," the agency said in a brief text message obtained by Xinhua.

"Sulman was involved in several terrorist operations in Abyan," the statement said.

A military official told Xinhua anonymously that "the captured al-Qaida leader conducted roadside bombings against security forces and was responsible for moving explosive devices into the neighboring southern province of Aden."

"The security force detained several other al-Qaida suspects and seized weapons during the operation in Abyan," the military source said.

The Yemen-based al-Qaida offshoot has exploited Yemen's year- long unrest and controlled several southern cities for more than one year before they were driven out by a U.S.-backed army offensive.

In June, Yemen's military officials announced seizing al-Qaida' s last bastion in the country's troubled south following the military offensive. However, local military and anti-terrorism experts said the Yemeni al-Qaida branch remained a major threat to the impoverished Arab country.

Nazir is the main warlord affiliated to the Pakistani Taliban in South Waziristan, one of seven districts that make up the semi-autonomous tribal belt considered a base for Al-Qaeda and other militants.

The bomber blew himself up near Nazir's vehicle as it passed through the market in Wana, the main town of the district, the officials said.

Two people were killed and at least five others were wounded, including Nazir, the officials told AFP on condition of anonymity, though accounts differed over the gravity of the warlord's injuries.

"The bazaar is closed now. We're trying to get more information," he said.

Car bombs kill 34 in pro-Assad Damascus suburb

Photo taken on Nov. 28, 2012 shows the wreckage of a vehicle at a blast site at the main square in Jaramana, suburb of Damascus, Syria. (Xinhua/Hazim)
(Reuters) - Two car bombs killed at least 34 people in a district of Damascus loyal to President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday in the deadliest attack on the Syrian capital in months.

The explosions struck the eastern neighbourhood of Jaramana, home to many of Syria's Druze minority as well as Christians who have fled violence elsewhere, ripping through shops and bringing debris crashing down on cars.

Once a bastion of security in Assad's 20-month campaign to crush an uprising against his rule, Damascus has been hit with increasing regularity as the rebels grow bolder.

State media said a bomb also detonated in the southern town of Bosra al-Sham, near Deraa, where the revolt began with peaceful street protests in March 2011. It also said eight "terrorists" were killed near Damascus while they tried to booby-trap a car with a bomb.

Authorities severely limit independent media in Syria and it was not immediately possible to verify reports. The government said 34 people were killed in Damascus but did not give a casualty count for the Bosra al-Sham bombing.

The attacks followed two weeks of military gains by rebels who have stormed and taken army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power which he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

Giving a second chance to terrorist organisations, the minister had announced lifting a ban on some proscribed organisations that are no longer involved in terrorist activities.

He had also asked TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud, his deputy Waliur Rehman, Punjabi Taliban chief Maulana Ismatullah Muawiya and pro-Pakistan Taliban leader Mullah Nazir to surrender for the sake of peaceful future for their children.

"I knew where the TTP receives its weapons. I would advise TTP leaders to surrender before our brave security forces catch your people," the interior minister declared.
