Central Bank in Nuristan Robbed by Police Guards

Two of the three local police accused of robbing the Nuristan branch of central bank Da Afghanistan Bank on Thursday night have been captured, but the third suspect and the money is still missing, local officials said Saturday.

The three police officers guarding the central bank branch in Nuristan capital Paroon on Thursday night are accused of robbing as much as 10 million Afghani [US$200,000] and running away, head of the provincial governor's office Mohammad Zarin told TOLOnews.

Two of the police were captured in the Kantiwa area of Paroon on Friday night but the hunt for the third is ongoing.

"Two of them were captured on Friday night by security forces, and police are investigating. It's not yet clear whether they helped steal all the money or not," he said.

Zarin said that initial reports indicate that the money was stolen after most of the locks on the safe deposit boxes were broken.

Meanwhile, local security officials said that some of other bank employees have also been detained as part of the investigation.
