Kenya's Raila Odinga wants EU to attack Somalia's al-Shabab Islamists

Kenya's prime minister has asked for help from the US and Europe in a "final onslaught" on the Somali port of Kismayo, the main stronghold of the Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

Raila Odinga said Kenyan forces would get to Kismayo by August and asked for both funds and troops.

He said beating al-Shabab would need "an operation by land, sea and air".

from BBC News, Africa

EU warships are in the area to tackle pirates but attacking al-Shabab would be a huge escalation in their mission.

Such action does not fall under the EU's mandate.

The EU's anti-piracy mission has not yet responded to the call.

Its mandate was recently expanded to allow for land attacks against Somalia-based pirates.

Up to 10 warships are on patrol off the Horn of Africa as part of the EU's Atalanta operation, which was launched in 2008 to protect commercial shipping against pirate attacks.
'Neutralise al-Shabab'

African Union soldiers, Ethiopian forces and Somali government troops have in recent months succeeded in driving al-Shabab from several towns.

Kenyan forces moved into Somalia last October and have been slowly moving toward Kismayo.

Kismayo is considered strategically important because the al-Shabab militants who control it get a significant portion of their funds by levying "taxes" on the port.

"Without controlling Kismayo, it's very difficult to completely neutralise al-Shabab," Mr Odinga told journalists in Nairobi.

"It has taken time because our forces felt that to move in otherwise would have cost a lot of lives, both civilian and military."

Mr Odinga said he intended to ask the US to help pay for the assault.

He said the US had previously "resisted" providing funds until Kenyan forces joined the African Union force known as Amisom. They joined earlier this month.

"If they can also bring military assistance so much the better, but for now we are talking about financial assistance," he said.

He said the EU was "reluctant" to commit because Kismayo is an al-Shabab stronghold and not a pirate stronghold.

But he said the international community should work together to "create an environment in Somalia that will facilitate the voluntary return of Somalis to Somalia."

Yemeni army takes over al-Qaida stronghold in restive south

Yemen conflict map by Evan Centanni
ADEN, Yemen, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni army managed on Tuesday to recapture the al-Qaida-held town of Jaar in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a significant victory against the terrorist group after more than one month fierce battles, the defense ministry said.

The army forces backed by pro-government militiamen have managed to take over Jaar town from the al-Qaida militants after fierce fighting that forced the terrorists to flee their sites into other hideouts in Abyan, the country's defense ministry said in a text message.

"Scores of terrorist fled Jaar with their weapons and vehicles when the army troops stormed the town at dawn form different directions," the ministry said.

A local resident told Xinhua anonymously "the al-Qaida militants distributed leaflets in which they requested pardon and forgiveness from the people in Jaar."

A military official said that about 25 al-Qaida militants were killed in the fighting that took place in central Jaar at dawn Tuesday.

"Troops of the 201st and 119th Armored Brigades are now taking control over the whole town and celebrate the great victory against the terrorist group in Abyan," the military official said anonymously.

Jaar town, some 30 km to the north of Zinjibar, the provincial capital of Abyan, has been under al-Qaida's control since May 2011 and is one of al-Qaida's last strongholds in Abyan.

The Yemeni government troops have waged an intensive military campaign, with support of the United States and Yemen's oil-rich neighbor Saudi Arabia, against several bastions of the al-Qaida terrorist group in Abyan province since last month.

The offensive aimed at recapturing several southern towns and cities seized by the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula during last year's political chaos.

Al-Qaeda: Germans caused engineer death

Al-Qaeda's north African branch has blamed the German government for the recent death of a hostage in a botched rescue raid in Nigeria, and warned Berlin to improve its treatment of Muslims.

from thelocal.de
Published: 12 Jun 12 08:49 CET

The US-based SITE monitoring service, which tracks jihadi websites, said on Tuesday that Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) had issued a statement about last month's death of Edgar Raupach.

AQIM did not explicitly confirm that it had held Raupach, who was killed by his captors on May 31 as Nigerian security forces conducted a raid in the northern city of Kano.

But the statement said Germany had given Nigeria the "green light" for the military operation "at a time when the mujahideen (were) keen to peacefully settle the issue" if their demands were met.

"We say to the family of the German citizen Edgar Fritz Raupach, the blood of your son hangs from the neck of your government," AQIM said, according to a SITE translation of the statement posted online on Monday.

The statement added that Germany must "correct" its handling of Muslims, "because your security and the security of your citizens are contingent upon the security of Muslims and the respect for their sanctities".

The German engineer was kidnapped on the outskirts of Kano in January in the days after a series of bombings and shootings claimed by Islamist group Boko Haram, which killed at least 185 people in the city.

AQIM has not been known to operate directly in Nigeria, though Boko Haram and other extremists in the country are believed to have links to the group.

According to Nigerian security sources, Raupach was shot and stabbed by his captors when the military moved in to try to save him.

The raid came as news of a fresh kidnapping emerged in Nigeria with officials confirming the abduction of an Italian engineer in Kwara State, in the African country's central-west.

In March, Nigerian security forces faced criticism after a failed bid to rescue an Italian and a British hostage. Their captors killed them before Nigerian forces could rescue them in a joint operation with British forces.

In its statement, AQIM warned European governments against using force to resolve kidnappings.

"This method of foolishness in dealing with the hostage issue has proven its failure and led in all cases to the killing of the hostages and many soldiers, while the serious negotiation style proved successful and led to their release," it said.

An eyewitness said the killing started at 1am, yesterday, when the villages were fast asleep with sporadic gunshots renting the air. The gunmen allegedly went from house to house killing the occupants of the buildings in cold blood.

The district head of Dangulbi, Alhaji Shehu Umar was among the people who narrowly escaped death.

The assailants, whose number could not be ascertained, reportedly came on motorcycles and left about 18 dead bodies after the operation. Nine others were killed along their route, while they were fleeing the town.

The gunmen were also said to have abandoned some of the motorcycles with which they came to Dangulbi.

He said eight people, who sustained various degrees of injuries, were on admission at the FMC. He said the gunmen first attacked the police, killed one and injured others, which led to the police fleeing the area before they started killing people in their houses.

Dangulbi said: “They are not armed robbers because nobody has reported that they took away his belongings.”

Zamfara State Deputy Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Wakala, visited Dangulbi town, about 100 kilometres away from the state capital, where the bodies of those killed were buried yesterday.

ADEN, Yemen, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Three senior members of the Yemen-based al-Qaida branch were killed Monday when warplanes struck their vehicle in the southern province of Abyan, a security official said.

The warplanes hit a vehicle carrying three commanders of the al- Qaida terrorist group while they were moving to oversee the fighting with army troops on the outskirts of Jaar, Abyan's second largest town, the local security official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"Their bodies were found inside the destroyed car," the security official said.

The army troops backed by pro-government militia continued to fight with al-Qaida militants and seized part of areas close to the insurgents-controlled town of Jaar, an army officer said.

"Now army soldiers are stationed about 2 km from the center of the town," the army officer said anonymously.

Up to 25 injured soldiers were taken to the neighboring province of Lahj for treatment, according to the army officer.

Local resident said, "Huge explosions are still rocking Jaar as army troops determined to eradicate al-Qaida's sites."

On the same day, a total of 33 al-Qaida militants and six army soldiers were killed during intensive clashes that took place in villages near Jaar town, a government official said.

The Yemeni government troops have stepped up military operations in Abyan in order to oust al-Qaida militants who have seized control of large swaths in the restive south during last year's political turmoil.

Government troops and reinforcements of counter-terrorism units assembled by the Yemeni military began last month offensives on al- Qaida bastions in Abyan, which made living conditions of thousands of displaced residents worsen.

Senior leaders of the Yemeni military, with support of U.S. counter-terrorism experts, have vowed to uproot the al-Qaida's regional bases from Yemen.
