U.S. drone strike bombs al-Qaida hideouts in Yemen's south, 8 killed

ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A pair of missiles fired from a U.S. drone slammed into al-Qaida hideouts in Yemen's southern province of Abyan early Thursday, killing at least eight militants, a security official told Xinhua.

The unmanned U.S. aircraft fired missiles at two gatherings of al-Qaida militants on the northwestern outskirts of Jaar town, killing at least eight members of the terrorist group on the scene, the local security official said, requesting anonymity.

"American drone-fired missiles hit two targets of the al-Qaida militants in Jaar's suburbs. Initial reports say eight terrorists were killed. Several militants were wounded and died later," the security official said.

Some of the dead were believed to be foreign fighters, but the security sources did not know where they were from.

"The identities of the terrorists killed in the aerial attack were not immediately clear. Some of the dead were foreigners," the source said.

A military intelligence officer confirmed to Xinhua the air strike and casualties.

Local residents said huge blasts rocked the town's neighborhoods and military warplanes were flying in the area at the time of the attack.

Yemen's military launched a month-long army offensive earlier this year and forced al-Qaida militants to flee several of their bastions in the country's restive southern and eastern provinces which they captured during last year's political turmoil.

The resurgent Yemeni branch of al-Qaida, which has increased its attacks on both Western and government targets in the Arabian Peninsula state, vowed to carry out more suicide attacks to take revenge.

Fighting al-Qaida militants in the restive south is one of the several challenges confronting Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has promised to launch a national dialogue to settle disputes among all political factions and to uproot the Yemeni branch of al-Qaida with the help of the United States and neighboring Saudi Arabia.

Kenyan police kill three suspects in al Shabaab raid

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Police shot dead three suspected supporters of the Somali militant group al Shabaab on Wednesday during a raid in Kenya's turbulent coastal region, in which a police officer also died.

Police arrested a number of suspects and confiscated grenades, AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition at a house in the Likoni area, Coast province police chief Aggrey Adoli said.

Kenya has suffered a series of grenade and gun attacks since it sent troops into Somalia a year ago in pursuit of the insurgents it blames for kidnapping security personnel and Western tourists from its territory.

A local group campaigning for independence for the Coast region has added to tension ahead of a presidential and parliamentary election due in March, the first since a disputed 2007 poll that saw violence nationwide in which more than 1,200 people were killed.

Adoli said the suspected al Shabaab supporters threw two grenades and opened fire when an elite Nairobi police unit burst into their building, seriously wounding four officers. One later died of his wounds in hospital.

"The operation is still on. We have arrested several suspects but it's still too early to say how many until we are through," Adoli told Reuters by phone.

Mwagomba Juma, a youth leader who lives in the area, said heavy gunfire, punctuated by at least two blasts, began in the early hours of the morning.

Dozens of police in bullet-proof vests and armed with automatic rifles combed the neighbourhood as nervous residents peered through their windows, witnesses said.

The instability has kept many foreign tourists away. The number of visitors were down by a fifth in the first eight months of this year, a heavy blow to the tourism sector which is a main driver of east Africa's biggest economy.

In Nairobi, Kenyan police arrested Mohammed Dor, a legislator and prominent Muslim cleric from the coastal region, after he said he had no objection to funding the separatist Muslim Mombasa Republican Council if they approached him.

"He will be charged in a Kenyan court of law on Thursday for incitement to violence," Ireri Kamwende, Nairobi's provincial criminal investigation officer said.

Kenyan authorities have intensified a crackdown on the MRC movement which is seeking independence for the coastal region, a tourism and trade hub. The MRC says the region has suffered decades of social and economic marginalisation.

On Monday, MRC leader Omar Mwamnuadzi and 36 supporters were arrested. Kenya's government said last week it had information that the MRC intended to sow chaos during national school exams that began on Monday.

Nigeria pirates kidnap 6 Russians, one Estonian

PARIS (Reuters) - Pirates off the coast of Nigeria have kidnapped six Russians and an Estonian during an attack on their ship, Bourbon, the French shipping company operating the vessel said on Wednesday.

Another nine crew members were safe and had reached the Nigerian port of Onne, in the oil-rich Niger Delta, said the spokeswoman for Bourbon, which supplies vessels to the offshore oil industry. The seven were abducted on Monday.

Pirate attacks are on the rise in the Gulf of Guinea, which is second only to the waters around Somalia for piracy.

Usually boats are attacked in order to steal their cargo, after which the crew is normally freed, although kidnapping is also a major criminal enterprise in the waters around the delta, the heart of Africa's biggest energy industry.

Pirates freed a Greek-operated gasoline tanker earlier this month that they had hijacked in the Gulf of Guinea near Ivory Coast. Fuel ships are a favourite target.

Many of the criminal gangs in pirate networks are offshoots from militant groups that used to operate in the delta before they agreed an amnesty in 2009.

In August pirates attacked a Greek-operated oil tanker with a crew of about 20 off the coast of Togo. They released the ship a few days later after stealing 3,000 tonnes of fuel.
